The Hate List began almost as a joke. How did it become so deadly?

In the story it says that Valerie told nick about every problem she had with people at school. When they had the problems  they put the people’s name on the list  trying to be funny.The big incident  that got nick really angry was when one day on the bus a girl named christy bruter broke Valerie MP3 player and Valerie told nick. Valerie just told nick because she wanted him to scare her which he did but he also changed her life forever when he shot  her in the stomach. After that one he killed multiple others that were on the “Hate List”(7 others). Then Valerie really regretted just joking around with the “hate list”.
